Ethics and Sustainability
We source our herbs from organic farms, Mila's own garden, as well as from some wild meadows we are lucky enough to have been given access to. This means the herbs in our skincare, elixirs, and teas have been grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides.
Intensive farming practices worldwide have aided in the degradation of our soil, which has a huge impact on our ability to grow food, and for the wider ecosystem that depends on fertile earth. Soil is precious and we support growing and harvesting methods that cause the least amount of damage as possible.
We use raw, natural ingredients to make our products. Unrefined, cold-pressed, and organic where possible. Synthetic ingredients can be harmful to us, as well as to our environment.
Phthalates for example, the chemicals found in many synthetic fragrances, can mimic our hormones and interfere with our endocrine system, which helps to control our growth, development, sexual function, reproduction and mood.
All of our products are free from phthalates, parabens, sulfates and all the bad stuff. Since we do not use synthetic preservatives, our products are always fresh and designed to be used within 6 - 12 months.
Vegan and Cruelty-free
When our founder, Mila, first started her journey into natural skincare she was shocked to find out how many animal ingredients were in products, and how many beauty products that she had grown up with were tested on animals.
You may have seen commercial beauty products that say the word "collagen" in the name or listed in the ingredients, which will usually have been processed from cows or fish. Collagen is an integral part of our skin, which keeps skin hydrated and smooth. As we age, we produce less of it, which contributes to fine lines and wrinkles.
Mila was determined to find a vegan alternative, and after lots of research she formulated Hedgerow Nectar, our miracle facial oil that makes skin appear more youthful and radiant, with no need for animal ingredients.
All of our products are vegan, none of which have been tested on animals.
Sustainably Sourced Cold-Pressed Oils
Where possible, our oils are sourced from Europe. All of our organic oils from our supplier have Soil Association organic certificates. Our strawberry and raspberry seed oils in Hedgerow Nectar are a byproduct of Europe's jam-making industry which would otherwise go to waste, and our olive oil for our soaps comes from a single-origin, organic and olive farm in the mountains of Greece.
Supporting Organic + Fair Trade Farms
We believe farmers should be paid and treated well, and herbs should be sown, grown, and harvested with love and care. We support farmers who are committed to sustainability and organic farming.
Where we can, we support women-owned farms, and farms who employ more vulnerable members of society, such as refugees. Our spices, which come mostly from India and Sri Lanka are fair trade, meaning the farmers get paid a fair price for their work.
With the exception of our dropper and spray lids, we house our products in recyclable amber glass and aluminium lids, and package our teas in compostable kraft pouches.
Our products come packaged in recyclable kraft boxes with paper tape. We occasionally reuse some plastic packaging that comes with our bottles for particularly fragile items, but we hope that you will continue to reuse it too!
